Psychotherapy for Individuals

Welcome! Let's try to understand what Psychotherapy is and how and when it can be helpful for individual adults. Feel free to contact me for more information. Psychotherapy allows for a time and place to talk about life issues and problems that a person is struggling with. I provide a supportive environment in which to explore these issues and to help you understand your situation better. Our goal is to help you improve your social relationships, have a better understanding of yourself, deeper social connections and relationships and help in resolving life conflicts. In the course of therapy, patients generally experience increased pleasure in life, reduced anxiety or depression and growth in general. Most people enter therapy due to feelings of sadness or depression or anxiety due to conflicts in regard to relationships with others. The main reason for therapy is to gain an improvement in one's quality of life. Psychotherapy can be extremely helpful for the following issues:

  • Relationship issues of all kinds, be it love relationships, family relationships, employer-employee, etc.
  • Tendency to form unhealthy relationships
  • Difficulty forming or maintaining relationships
  • Difficulty forming friendships
  • Depression
  • Sadness related to grief or trauma
  • Post traumatic stress-related to an accident or incident that was either recent or not
  • Anxiety or stress
  • Panic

Artists have many of the same issues as everyone else but in addition, they may face issues that are better helped when someone is sensitive to their struggles as an artist. Establishing a life which supports and nourishes one's creativity is an enormous challenge. There are conflicts of time versus money, structure vs. freedom, the need for connection to others and the need for solitude and creative time. Societal values and internalized expectations and conflicts exert an unconscious influence on our happiness and on our creativity. I am a Visual Artist, Dancer and Psychotherapist with special training and extensive experience working with visual artists, musicians, writers, actors and other creative professionals.

Some of the issues that Artists typically struggle with are:. Self-defeating thoughts   and behavior

Difficulty in believing in one's self

Artistic blocks

Perfectionism

Isolation

Avoidance of doing/promoting your work

  1. Difficulty motivating one's self
  2. Lack of emotional support
  3. Trouble consistently believing in your work's value
  4. Difficulty in actualizing creative projects
  5. Stress or panic about deadlines
  6. Procrastination

Many artists are skeptical or fearful about entering Psychotherapy as they imagine their pain and unhappiness is the motivator for their artistic creations. It is my experience that when some of the blocks of self destructive behavior and impediments to creativity are removed one is freer to create. Art comes from within and the deeper one explores one's subconscious, the more material there is to explore or work on and the freer one becomes to open new avenues for creativity. Removing creative blocks and resolving conflicts is a way to free more energy for creativity and productivity, while at the same time allows one to have a more fulfilling life.

Our Therapy

Couples Therapy

Let's try to understand what Psychotherapy is and how and when it can be helpful for Couples. Feel free to contact me for more information.

Psychotherapy allows for a time and place to talk about life issues and personal problems that a couple are struggling with. I provide a supportive environment in which to explore these issues and to help you both understand your situation better. Our goal is to help you improve your relationship with each other and with the outside world, have a better understanding of yourself and your partner. Our goal will be to help you and your partner communicate better and have a deeper connection and a healthier relationship with each other. In the course of therapy, couples generally experience Increased Pleasure with each other and in life together and apart, reduced anxiety or depression and growth in general.

Most couples enter therapy due to conflicts in the relationship and difficulty in communicating with each other. What may feel like unresolvable issues are often the result of feelings of Sadness or Depression or Anxiety due to conflicts in the relationship. Often one or both people are better able to address these issues with the help of a trained Psychotherapist. Issues of Shame, Timidity, Fear and Anger often get in the way of meaningful communication. The main reason for Couples Therapy is to help the couple communicate better and enjoy their life together in a meaningful and constructive way. This in turn should result in an improvement in the quality of life for both people.

  1. Psychotherapy for couples for the following issues:
  2. Relationship issues of all kinds
  3. Difficulty getting along
  4. Tendency to form unhealthy relationships
  5. Difficulty forming or maintaining relationships
  6. Difficulty communicating with each other
  7. Abusive or Nagging relationship
  8. Depression or Anxiety or Shame or Stress of one or both members of the couple
  9. Sadness related to Grief or Trauma
  10. Post traumatic stress-related to an accident or incident that was either recent or not
  11. Pressure from outside forces like family, friends, children, etc.
  12. Health Issues of one of the couple or of a significant family member

Supervision and Training Analysis for Psychotherapists and Psychoanalysts

Sarina Meones is an experienced Training Analyst and Supervisor for the Theodore Reik Consultation Center and of the Psychoanalytic Training Institute of National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. She has training in Individual Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, Child Therapy and Art Therapy. In additions to obtaining a Degree in Psychoanalysis from NPAP in 1986 she also has a degree in Group Therapy from the Post Graduate Center for Mental Health. She is also a Faculty Member of NPAP.

Training Analysis is probably the most important experience in a Therapist's training. It is invaluable in exploring one's own psyche and how to do the work of Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. It provides the basis and role model for future work as a Psychotherapist and Psychoanalyst. It is also a way to explore one's own Transference and Countertransference feelings for the beginning and experienced Therapist.

In Supervision the Psychotherapist, Counselor or Psychoanalyst in Training learns how to listen effectively, develop your own voice, to develop your own therapeutic skills. It is a way to expand your capacity for empathy for your patients in their psychic and life struggles. It is a way to help your patients grow and to ultimately build your own practice.

Sarina Meones is available for Training and  Supervision in working with Adults, Children ages 3 and up, Teens and Couples. She is also available for Distance Therapy and Supervision by Telephone or Skype for those Therapists who do not have access to a Supervisors or Training Analyst nearby.

Please contact Sarina Meones by Telephone at 212-924-8412 or email SarinaMeones@gmail.com her for an appointment or a consultation.
